Quick Summary

Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh disclosed that feeling disrespected and unsupported led to his 2019 retirement from cricket. In a podcast with Sania Mirza, he explained he stopped enjoying the game and had nothing left to prove after his illustrious career. The revelation comes six years after his exit following omission from the ODI World Cup squad.

Yuvraj Singh Opens Up on Emotional Reasons Behind Cricket Retirement

Legendary Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh has shared a candid insight into the factors that prompted his retirement from all forms of cricket in June 2019. Speaking on a podcast hosted by tennis star Sania Mirza, the 44-year-old all-rounder revealed that a lack of respect and support in his final playing days played a pivotal role in his decision.

Yuvraj, celebrated for his heroics in India's 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup triumphs, retired after being excluded from India's squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup. His career, spanning over 398 international matches, included 11,778 runs and 148 wickets, along with iconic moments like hitting six sixes in an over against Stuart Broad.

"Not Feeling Respected": Yuvraj's Direct Quote

During the conversation, Yuvraj articulated his mental struggle vividly. "I was not enjoying my game. I had a feeling that why am I playing cricket when I'm not enjoying it? I was not feeling supported. I was not feeling respected," he said. He added, "Why do I need to do this when I don't have this? Why am I lingering on to something that I'm not enjoying? Why do I need to play? To prove what? I can't do more than this, mentally or physically, and it was hurting me. And the day I stopped, I was myself again."

This emotional disclosure highlights the toll of high expectations on aging stars, even those with legendary status. Yuvraj emphasized that after giving his best to the game, continuing without joy or backing no longer made sense.

From Cancer Survivor to World Cup Hero

Yuvraj's journey was marked by extraordinary resilience. He battled and overcame cancer during the 2011 World Cup, where he earned Player of the Tournament honors with 362 runs and 15 wickets. Despite such peaks, the mounting criticism and lack of support toward the end of his career weighed heavily.

  • Key Career Highlights:
  • Player of the Tournament, 2011 ODI World Cup
  • First to hit six sixes in an international over (2007 T20 World Cup)
  • Over 11,000 international runs and 148 wickets
  • Contributions in 304 ODIs, 58 T20Is, and 40 Tests

Mentoring the Next Generation

Post-retirement, Yuvraj has transitioned into mentoring young talents, including players like Abhishek Sharma. His experiences underscore the importance of mental well-being in professional sports, offering lessons for current athletes navigating similar pressures.

The podcast revelation has reignited discussions on player support systems in Indian cricket, reminding fans of Yuvraj's indelible legacy.
